Captiva's Historic Cemetery...Mosaic Monday

We've been visiting Captiva Island for over fifteen years and one of our favorite places is The Chapel by The Sea.

Located next to the Chapel is Captiva's Historic Cemetery.

It's no surprise that it's a peaceful place to visit, the only sound you hear are the ocean waves. There's always seashells resting on the headstones, and around the plots. You can click HERE to see a list of those who are laid to rest, as well as some historic facts.

It's also a blessing that the oil spill hasn't reached these beautiful islands...

Captiva: Oil-free Beach Guarantee
At this time, the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the northern Gulf of Mexico has not impacted the distant beach of Captiva Island, "Only sun tan oil has been found on our beach." There are no advisories for swimming or fishing in the Gulf of Mexico off Lee County, and it is safe to purchase commercial seafood at local restaurants and grocery stores. J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel Island is reporting, "There are currently no impacts to our refuge waters. The beaches are clean and open." An ocean current model produced by the federally-funded National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) suggests drifting oil could reach mid-Atlantic beaches and even the British Isles, while still not reaching Captiva.
